Mid Century Modern, a post modern fad?
September 17, 2009This is an exquisite example of classic, Danish mid century modern design. But does it only appeal to baby boomers who grew up during the height of mid century modern design? or is it’s appeal timeless? Of course I love it but then I’m 50 (tail end of the boomer generation) so it appeals to me on so many levels. I think most of all I am drawn to the sleek elegance of the design. Look at the tapering & tilted backs on the chairs, and when you get a moment look underneath the table at the elegance of the crossbanding and struts here.
Will interest in mid century modern design last beyond my generation or will it be reviled & ridiculed in years to come? Let me know what you think? And by the way if you love it, and have to have it, you can buy it, it’s up for auction! Here’s the description from Gray’s Auctioneers.
A Danish Rosewood Dining Suite, by Koefoeds, Hornslet, Comprising a gateleg drop leaf table, the cross banded oval top above strut supports, and a set of six matching chairs, including two carvers, each with tapering slat filled backs above upholstered seats on turned legs linked by stretchers.

MCM is not just for boomers. I’m in my early 30′s. Am very passionate about Mid Century Modern design. As a blogger blogging about mid century modernism I’m on the front lines seeing young people actively engaging in the style and period. Some as young as 20.
Good design is timeless. Yes. But lets also realize this aesthetic is subtly appearing in mainstream TV programs and publications. This exposure has an impact no matter how slight.
It’s tangible. It’s definitive. It’s ever modern.

I recently aquired a Koefoeds Hornslet table and 6 chairs that I know nothing about, but due to it’s beauty I had to get it. The table has 2 leaves that slide out to the side which extends the basic width from 23 1/2 inches to 42 inches. The length is 55 inches. The realy interesting part is the legs on the table can be flipped inward, which drops thye tabletop to coffee table height. Anyone have any ideas/ comments on a set like this. I haven’t been able to find anything similar on line. All pieces are stamped with Koefoeds Hornslet. Thanks for any input
One of the best sites to do research is liveauctioneers.com. They have a wide variety of stuff on the site, and be sure to check the sold items. You will then see what dining sets similar to yours are fetching.
