Frank Duveneck taught William Merritt Chase how to draw

December 12, 2009

This graphite on paper, “Figural Study of a Woman,” is attributed to Ohio resident Frank Duveneck. He began his training at the Munich Academy in Germany, where Frank Duveneck was influenced with past great masters like, Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens. Upon returning to America, Duveneck art was a reflection of European Naturalism. His usage of high light contrast and earthy tones in the artwork was reminiscent of the 17th century masters that had influenced him.

Through Frank Duveneck’s career he was not only an artist, but, he was an art teacher as well. Duveneck taught in Munich and Florence from 1878 -1888, where he taught American Artists like William Merritt Chase and J. Fran Currier. From 1903 until the remainder of his life, Frank Duveneck was also chairman at the Art Academy in Cincinnati Ohio.
